New York City Bankruptcy Assistance Project (NYC BAP) Training

Posted on

The New York City Bankruptcy Assistance Project (NYC BAP) is part of Legal Services NYC, the largest provider of civil legal services in the United States. Legal volunteers work to save New York’s most vulnerable residents from wage garnishments, property seizures, and foreclosures. We target low-income working families, for whom bankruptcy relief can make the difference between being able to participate in the economy or not.

NYC BAP seeks law student volunteers for its bankruptcy petitions program. Volunteers will take an intensive bankruptcy practice training, meet and screen potential clients, and then prepare the clients’ bankruptcy petitions under the supervision of experienced attorneys.

The training is mandatory, and will be held on Friday, September 15, in Vanderbilt Hall Room 214 from 10:00am-4:30pm. There will be a 45 minute break and lunch will be served. To RSVP for the training, click here. If you cannot attend all or part of the training, email pilc.info@nyu.edu.

Following the training, if you are interested in participating in BAP, please send your name, email address, and phone number to Alaura Rich at adr9719@mercury.law.nyu.edu to set up a screener interview.

Proficiency in Spanish or another foreign language is helpful, but not required.

Note: This is posted as an opportunity to perform volunteer legal work. Whether the work qualifies toward the New York State Bar 50-hour pro bono requirement is a determination made on a case-by-case basis by the Character and Fitness Committee that processes bar admission applications. For more information about the 50-hour pro bono requirement, links to the rule and FAQ document, and who to contact if you have any questions, visit the Public Interest Law Center website here: http://www.law.nyu.edu/publicinterestlawcenter/forstudents/nys-bar-pro-bono-requirement.
