Nov. 10: Sinsheimer Children’s Rights Fellowship Deadline

The application period for the Sinsheimer Children’s Rights Fellowship (2018-2019) is now open. The Fellowship will commence in September of 2018 for the period of one year. One position is available.


Please note: Partnership for Children’s Rights is in merger discussions with Mobilization for Justice (MFJ), a non-profit legal services organization that provides a wide range of free civil legal services to low-income New Yorkers.  The merger would substantially expand MFJ’s special education practice for families of students with disabilities.  Assuming the merger happens, the Fellowship will take place at MFJ.  Fellowship applicants can read more about MFJ and its work on behalf of low-income New Yorkers at[] 


Who May Apply: Recent NYU School of Law graduates (including graduates completing clerkships) are welcome to apply for the Fellowship. Graduates of other law schools are not eligible for the Fellowship. Applicants must be admitted in New York State, seeking bar admission in New York State, or eligible for reciprocal admission in New York State.


When To Apply: Applications may be submitted until November 10, 2017.


What Must Be Included: Applications must include a résumé, writing sample, transcript (unofficial or official), and references, along with a cover letter providing a detailed description of the candidate’s commitment to child advocacy and public interest law.

Fellowship Description: Recipients of the Fellowship will serve as term Staff Attorneys at Partnership for Children’s Rights. They will work alongside a team of lawyers who are committed to improving the lives of children with special needs in New York City.


Founded in 1999 as Legal Services for Children, Inc., Partnership for Children’s Rights provides free legal representation for economically disadvantaged families of children with special needs who live within the five boroughs of New York City. PFCR strives to obtain equal opportunity and access to services to help children grow into self-sufficient and independent adults.


The Sinsheimer Children’s Rights Fellowship offers an outstanding opportunity for lawyers interested in a career in public service to experience the rewards of providing direct services to families in need. The Fellow will represent families in administrative hearings brought against the New York City Department of Education to secure appropriate educational placements and services for children with learning, emotional and physical disabilities.  The Fellow will:

  • conduct client interviews and case preparations, including legal research and record review;
  • develop legal arguments, gather evidence, and prepare witnesses;
  • be counsel of record in administrative hearings and on appeal before the State Review Officer; and
  • engage in post-hearing advocacy, including state and federal court practice.


Compensation for this position will be equal to the starting salary at The Legal Aid Society of New York City.  Benefits include medical coverage, long and short term disability insurance, and life insurance. Fellows are eligible to participate in Partnership’s 401(k) plan after six months of employment.


Partnership for Children’s Rights is a 501(c)(3) not-for-profit organization. Loan payments made under the appropriate federal loans and programs have been considered “qualifying payments” under the Public Service Loan Forgiveness (PSLF) program.
