Dean’s Roundtable with Melissa Tidwell ’03, VP and general counsel at Reddit, Inc., Thursday, October 26, 2017.

Throughout the school year, the dean hosts roundtable discussions with prominent guests who have utilized their law degrees in a variety of nontraditional ways. Over lunch with a small group of students, guests discuss their work experiences, sharing valuable insights about how they found their chosen path. Please note that the roundtables are informal and off-the-record.

Melissa Tidwell ’03, who will be the Dean’s guest on Thursday, October 26, is vice president and general counsel at Reddit, Inc. Launched in 2005, Reddit is an online forum where users can share ideas, the latest trends, and breaking news. Ms. Tidwell advises on a wide range of legal and business matters and manages the company’s legal, policy, and communications groups. Her day-to-day work varies widely and often includes issues related to employment law, immigration, and intellectual property, among many others.

Prior to joining Reddit in 2015, Ms. Tidwell served as senior counsel at Google for 8 years, advising the product, engineering, business development, and sales teams on a variety of Google products. Before joining Google, she worked at Morrison & Foerster LLP in San Francisco. She began her legal career at Debevoise & Plimpton LLP in New York. While at Debevoise, Ms. Tidwell had the opportunity to work on a wide variety of legal issues including mergers and acquisitions, voting rights, and intellectual property cases. It was during this time that she also began advising clients in the area of technology, media, and telecommunications, which led her ultimately to make the transition to Google.

She holds a BA in American Studies from Georgetown University and a JD from New York University School of Law.

The roundtables begin at 12:30 PM and end at 1:50 PM in Snow Dining Room. They are open to 18 interested JD and graduate students. In order to achieve a representational mix of students, we will designate a proportionate number of seats to JD students and graduate students. Within each group (JD or LLM), attendees will be selected randomly from all students who have signed up by 5pm on the day the invitation is distributed.

If you would like to attend, please email Ken Seagreaves at Please indicate whether you are a JD or graduate student, and whether you have any dietary restrictions. If you are allotted a space, you will receive a confirmation email.
