Memo to: All International Students on F-1 Visas

From: Harry Melo – Office of Global Services
Paula Bailey – Office of Academic Services

This email is intended for all F1 students. Attached is an F-1 Work Authorization Checklist and a Legal Profession Practicum Information Sheet. Please review both documents prior to beginning a CPT application.

F-1 students are provided the opportunity to register for the Legal Professional Practicum (LAW.LW.10009) for 0.5 credits or 1 credit per semester and during the summer. Many F-1 students have pursued this opportunity, as it allows for academic guidance while working in the legal field. Please note that a student cannot register for more than 2 LPP credits during his/her academic career. Please review the information provided and if you have any questions regarding LPP, please address them directly to Paula Bailey, Associate Director of Academic Services at the School of Law.

Work Authorization for F-1 students CPT Webinar:

For your convenience, Mr. Harry Melo, International Student Advisor of OGS will present a brief webinar to explain the CPT process to interested F-1 students. You will have the opportunity to submit questions when you register for the webinar.

F-1 students who pursue CPT do NOT have to use any of their 12-months of Optional Practical Training, but are instead able to work during the academic year and summer break using Curriculum Practical Training (CPT). Please note CPT cannot be used to facilitate employment during the summer after you have completed your degree. Detailed information regarding CPT can be found on the attached information sheet.

CPT is authorized by NYU’s Office for Global Services; no government authorization is required. Please carefully review and abide by the attached procedures when applying for CPT. Please note that a student MUST be able to provide a job offer letter in order to apply for CPT. OGS requires ten business days to process the CPT application. Please plan accordingly.

J-1 Students: If you are not an F-1 student, please disregard this notice. J-1 students who wish to work this summer need to discuss this directly with their J-1 sponsor. If your DS-2019 form was issued by NYU, please view the OGS website for guidance on Academic Training.

If you are unable to attend the webinar, please feel free to send an email to to schedule an appointment with Paula Bailey to discuss the CPT Process.

We look forward to seeing you on Wednesday, Feb 17.
