The Migration Policy Institute @ NYU—Fall 2008
Professor Cristina Rodríguez will supervise a limited number of students in the Fall 2008 semester in conducting research with Muzaffar Chishti and the Migration Policy Institute—a Washington, D.C.-based think tank focused on policy related to global migration. The aim of the research will be to contribute analysis to the ongoing immigration debate.
The signature project of the initiative thus far has been the production and analysis of a database tracking the record levels of state legislation related to immigration introduced between 2001 and 2008. Students will continue this semester doing both quantitative and qualitative work on this project. Other projects in development include: 1) assessing the impact of the so-called 287(g) agreements that authorize local law enforcement to enter into agreements with the federal government to enforce immigration law; 2) developing strategies or program ideas for securing the right to counsel in immigration proceedings; and 3) reforming the immigration adjudication system (the IJs and the BIA).
Thus far, the MPI/NYU collaboration has resulted in three MPI publications coauthored by NYU students, which have been met with great interest from the immigration policy community, as well as congressional testimony. Some students will have the option of signing up for two credits of directed research, and others will have the option of working on a volunteer basis. Previous experience with immigration law is preferred.
An information session will be held on Thursday, September 4, at 5:00 PM in Vanderbilt Hall, Room 313. If you are unable to attend the meeting but are interested in the project, please contact Professor Rodríguez at cristina.rodriguez@nyu.edu.
Please note: this position is offered ONLY to enrolled NYU School of Law students.
