Bidding will close the following Sunday, November 8.

Important Reminders for Fall OCI:
Please remember to enter your class schedule upon bidding in order to avoid being scheduled for an interview during this time. In addition, please note that the deadline to cancel a scheduled interview is 12:00 midnight the Wednesday prior to the employer’s scheduled visit to campus. Cancellations will only be accepted due to an emergency or an extenuating circumstance after that time.

Open Sign-Up for Week 7 of Fall OCI will begin at 12:00 noon on Thursday, November 12, and will close at 12:00 noon one day prior to the employer’s interview date. Open Sign-Up is conducted in real-time through CSM and is not a lottery. To sign up for an interview via Open Sign-up, simply click on an available date and choose a time slot. *Please note: If you are already logged in to CSM prior to the opening of this module, you must LOG OUT and log back in to view all available Open Sign-up slots.

If you are conducting a private sector job search for Summer 2010, we ask that you log into your Mandatory Fall 2009 Recruiting Survey (”Recruiting Survey”) today and fill out Sections 1‐4. You may also include any individual comments in Section 7. Please also go back into the survey each week as you have updates to your callbacks and offers. Once you have accepted an offer for summer 2010, please return to the survey to answer question 5. Students who have not received an offer by November 15 should also log in at that time and answer question 5 and 6. The Recruiting Survey is available online through Survey Monkey using the individualized link sent via email to all 2Ls who did EIW on Friday, August 28. During this challenging job market, timely feedback regarding your job search results is critically important to the accuracy of our counseling and our ability to assist you in your ongoing job search. For this reason, OCS has asked you to complete the Recruiting Survey as you progress through the Fall 2009 recruiting season, and to update the survey with the status of your interviews, callbacks, and offers throughout the semester. All responses are kept completely confidential.

In response to a high interest in positions with the IRS Office of Chief Counsel from students in the LL.M. program who have prior work experience (and are therefore ineligible to apply for the Honors Program), the OCS has arranged for IRS attorneys to come to campus to have lunch with you. They have agreed to come to lunch on-campus to meet informally with you and discuss the lateral recruiting process. The lunch will be Tuesday, November 3 from 11:30-12:30 in the OCS Conference Room (Fourth Floor of Furman Hall). The attorneys speaking are not collecting resumes and do not have open positions now, but they will give you tips about how to strengthen your online applications for when lateral positions do open up, and will also answer any questions you may have. I hope this will help you in reaching your goal of working at the IRS. Space is limited, you must RSVP to clara.solomon@nyu.edu by October 28. This program is for Tax LL.M. students who are ineligible for the Honors Program only.

The Information Law Institute ITS Colloquium presents a talk by Paul Ohm, Associate Professor, University of Colorado Law School.

Date: Thursday, November 12, 2009
Time: 4:30-6:00 p.m.
Location: 245 Sullivan Street, Furman Hall, Room 212
Topic: Broken Promises of Privacy: The Limits of Anonymization and the Power of Reidentification

Abstract: Computer scientists have recently undermined our faith in the privacy-protecting power of anonymization, the name for techniques for protecting the privacy of individuals in large databases by deleting information like names and social security numbers. These scientists have demonstrated they can often ‘reidentify’ or ‘deanonymize’ individuals hidden in anonymized data with astonishing ease. By understanding this research, we will realize we have made a mistake, labored beneath a fundamental misunderstanding, which has assured us much less privacy than we have assumed. This mistake pervades nearly every information privacy law, regulation, and debate, yet regulators and legal scholars have paid it scant attention. We must respond to the surprising failure of anonymization, and this Article provides the tools to do so.

Regularly during the school year, the Dean hosts roundtable discussions with prominent guests who have utilized their law degrees in a variety of nontraditional ways. Over lunch with a small group of students, guests speak autobiographically about their work experiences, sharing valuable insight about how they found their chosen path. Please note that the roundtables are informal and off-the-record.

John Suydam ’85, the General Counsel & Chief Administrative & Compliance Officer of Apollo Management, L.P. will be the Dean’s guest on Thursday, October 22. From 2002-06, John was a partner at O’Melveny & Myers LLP, where he served as head of Mergers & Acquisitions Practice and co-head of the Corporate Department. Prior to that, he served as chairman of the law firm O’Sullivan, LLP (formerly, O’Sullivan, Grave & Karabell,) which specialized in representing private equity investors.

He also serves on the board of directors of the Private Equity Council and the Big Apple Circus and is a Trustee of St. Agnes Cathedral Parish in Rockville Centre, NY.

John earned a J.D. from New York University School of Law in 1985, and he graduated magna cum laude with a BA in History from the State University of New York at Albany.

The dean’s roundtables are open to 18 interested NYU School of Law J.D. and graduate students. In order to achieve a representational mix of students, we will designate a proportionate number of seats to J.D. students and graduate students, respectively, to be assigned on a first-come, first-served basis. The roundtables will begin at 12:30 p.m. in Snow Dining Room, on the fourth floor of Vanderbilt Hall. Lunch will be served. If you would like to attend a roundtable, please sign up in advance by calling Barry Dorsey at (212) 998-6004 or by emailing her at barry.dorsey@nyu.edu.
The Office of Student Affairs offers a confidential academic tutoring program for J.D. and LL.M. students. Students seeking tutors must note the following:
• Tutoring is not available to first-semester 1Ls.
• Tutoring is available on a limited basis to LL.M. students.
• Students may request a tutor for a maximum of two courses.
• You must request a tutor no later than Friday, November 6.
• We will attempt to assign tutors to students in academic need, but cannot guarantee that we can do so in every case. (Generally need is demonstrated by having received two B- (or lower) grades during your career at NYU.)
• The program is free of charge.

To request a tutor, please send your name, your class, your telephone number, the classes in which you are seeking a tutor (including the instructor’s name), and a copy of your unofficial transcript to law.studentaffairs@nyu.edu.

Tutoring Program: Tutor Recruitment

Students are needed to work with other students who have requested tutors. Students who tutor must have received a grade of “A-” or better in the course(s) of interest. The tutoring stipend is $12 per hour. Specific hours for tutoring sessions are arranged between the tutor and tutee. Tutees usually require two to three hours of assistance per week. If you are interested in acting as a tutor, please contact Paul O’Grady, Associate Director for Student Affairs at 212-998-6397 or paul.ogrady@nyu.edu.

The First-Year Faculty Lunch Program enables students to meet faculty outside of the classroom. First year students, often in groups of four to six, invite professors to lunch. The Office of Student Affairs will cover the costs through an arrangement with faculty. Annually, this is one of our most successful programs. We encourage you to take advantage of this opportunity.

The Office of Student Affairs invites applications for Prominence funding. This fund supports three types of student activities. First, it supplements student group expenses in connection with sending representatives to national conferences. Second, it supplements student group participation in national or regional moot court-type competitions. Third, it aids individual students who are presenting papers at national conferences. Funding is only for activities that take place in the U.S. Applications should be made at least four to six weeks before the scheduled event, but no later than November 16 for the Fall semester. Instructions regarding applying for funding are available online.

Anne Chwat ‘87, who will be the Dean’s guest on Thursday, October 15, is executive vice president and general counsel for Burger King Corporation. Anne is also the company’s chief ethics and compliance officer and the president of the Have It Your Way® Foundation, the charitable arm of Burger King Corporation. She reports directly to CEO John Chidsey and serves as a key member of the executive leadership team. Anne is responsible for the worldwide legal affairs of the company, managing all legal aspects of the company’s global activities. As chief ethics and compliance officer for Burger King Corporation, Anne oversees the company’s worldwide ethics and compliance program.

Prior to Burger King Corporation, Anne was senior vice president, general counsel and chief ethics and compliance officer of BMG Music, the music division of media company Bertelsmann AG. In that capacity, she was the head of BMG’s Worldwide Legal and Business Affairs department and oversaw all legal aspects of BMG Music’s merger with Sony Music, which created SonyBMG Music Entertainment, the second largest music company in the world. Chwat also served as associate corporate counsel for Joseph E. Seagram & Sons, Inc., the parent company of Universal Studios, Universal Music Group, Universal Theme Parks and the Seagram Spirits & Wine Group. Anne’s primary responsibilities at Seagram were corporate transactional and compliance matters.

Prior to Joseph E. Seagram & Sons, Inc, Anne was in private practice with Cleary, Gottlieb, Steen & Hamilton of New York City. At Cleary Gottlieb, Anne specialized in mergers and acquisitions and project finance transactions.

Anne also serves on the executive board of the Women’s Leadership Forum at Burger King Corporation. In addition, she is currently vice chairman of the Florida Education Foundation, a non-profit corporation which provides direct support to the Florida Department of Education, and is a member of the International Women’s Forum.

Anne earned a J.D. from NYU School of Law in 1987 and a B.A. from NYU in 1984.

If you would like to attend a roundtable, please sign up in advance by calling Penelope Fernandes at (212) 998-6003 or by emailing her at penelope.fernandes@nyu.edu. Please indicate whether you are a J.D. or graduate student, and whether you have any dietary restrictions.
