Dean’s Roundtable with Anne Chwat ’87, General Counsel & Chief Ethics and Compliance Officer of Burger King Corporation on Thursday, October 15, 2009
Regularly during the school year, the Dean hosts roundtable discussions with prominent guests who have utilized their law degrees in a variety of nontraditional ways. Over lunch with a small group of students, guests speak autobiographically about their work experiences, sharing valuable insight about how they found their chosen path. Please note that the roundtables are informal and off-the-record.
Anne Chwat ‘87, who will be the Dean’s guest on Thursday, October 15, is executive vice president and general counsel for Burger King Corporation. Anne is also the company’s chief ethics and compliance officer and the president of the Have It Your Way® Foundation, the charitable arm of Burger King Corporation. She reports directly to CEO John Chidsey and serves as a key member of the executive leadership team. Anne is responsible for the worldwide legal affairs of the company, managing all legal aspects of the company’s global activities. As chief ethics and compliance officer for Burger King Corporation, Anne oversees the company’s worldwide ethics and compliance program.
Prior to Burger King Corporation, Anne was senior vice president, general counsel and chief ethics and compliance officer of BMG Music, the music division of media company Bertelsmann AG. In that capacity, she was the head of BMG’s Worldwide Legal and Business Affairs department and oversaw all legal aspects of BMG Music’s merger with Sony Music, which created SonyBMG Music Entertainment, the second largest music company in the world. Chwat also served as associate corporate counsel for Joseph E. Seagram & Sons, Inc., the parent company of Universal Studios, Universal Music Group, Universal Theme Parks and the Seagram Spirits & Wine Group. Anne’s primary responsibilities at Seagram were corporate transactional and compliance matters.
Prior to Joseph E. Seagram & Sons, Inc, Anne was in private practice with Cleary, Gottlieb, Steen & Hamilton of New York City. At Cleary Gottlieb, Anne specialized in mergers and acquisitions and project finance transactions.
Anne also serves on the executive board of the Women’s Leadership Forum at Burger King Corporation. In addition, she is currently vice chairman of the Florida Education Foundation, a non-profit corporation which provides direct support to the Florida Department of Education, and is a member of the International Women’s Forum.
Anne earned a J.D. from NYU School of Law in 1987 and a B.A. from NYU in 1984.
The dean’s roundtables are open to 18 interested NYU School of Law J.D. and graduate students. In order to achieve a representational mix of students, we will designate a proportionate number of seats to J.D. students and graduate students, respectively, to be assigned on a first-come, first-served basis. The roundtables will begin at 12:30 p.m. in Snow Dining Room, on the fourth floor of Vanderbilt Hall. Lunch will be served.
